Urban wilderness is an oxymoron. The word urban connotes buildings, design, planning and control while the word wilderness refers to nature, freedom, and spontaneity. If we focus the view to locations in the city where urban and wilderness meet one could raise the issues of hidden spaces of untamed, neuralgic loci of urban governance and nostalgic places of memories. The project has been realized as site-specific fieldwork in Zagreb and as an exhibition in public spaces. Several hybrid spaces of urban wilderness have been recognized and processed by visual and textual forms in order to provoke rethinking of multiple meanings of urban wilderness and to negotiate its potential for social and cultural critique and/or its potential for lived urban imagination.
The project is realized as part of the ongoing urban research on urban hyper-textuality by the multimedia art association Shadowcasters.
