On April 9, 2015, Petra Kelemen and Nevena Škrbić Alempijević delivered an invited public lecture entitled “The Town as it Should Be” in the frame of the 11th season of Culture Shock Festival in Križevci. They presented results of their extensive research on festivals encompassed in the book “The Town as it Should Be. Ethnological and Cultural Anthropological Reflections on Festivals” (Zagreb, 2012). Based primarily on the analysis of three case studies – Festival of Dalmatian Klapa Singing in Omiš, Ogulin Fairytale Festival and Špancirfest in Varaždin – but also on other theoretical and fieldwork insights, the authors argued for the approach to festivals as significant cultural and social phenomena, as well as potent elements of urban (re)identifications.
